JUNE - The Month of Roses

Although the rose has always been my favorite flower, it is also the flower of June, my birth month. Growing up on a farm in northeastern Pennsylvania, I cherished the intoxicating fragrance of the antique rose bushes growing around the stonewall foundations of old razed houses on our property where early settlers lived, but later moved westward for reasons unknown. Every June, like a birthday present from the earth and heaven above, it was a delight to see the many bushes, growing wild, bursting into riotous pink blossoms, and spreading over an entire knoll of our pasture.

Old roses, also called “old-fashioned roses,” “heirloom roses,” “antique roses” and “old garden roses” are those plants introduced in America prior to 1867. Although there are hundreds of old rose varieties, they are best known for their hardiness and fragrance.

The oldest rose planted today was in existence some 2,000 years before the birth of Christ. It migrated from Persia (Iran) through Turkey to France and finally into England Later, clippings of these old garden roses were often hand-carried to America by early immigrants from Europe.

In my novel, Four White Roses, I chose to have the heroine try to save the last white Austrian rose that the hero’s great-grandmother brought with her stateside just prior to World War I.

Sometimes writers don’t know where they get ideas for writing a novel. Sometimes thoughts and ideas just pop into our heads. To be honest, only when I started writing Four White Roses did mental sparks erupt—and I was able to draw an eerie connection to my own life. I have actually saved the last old roses bushes planted on my family farm and dating back to the 1800s.

Luckily, I took cuttings after my husband and I were married. With the passing of my parents, the rose bushes eventually died out, probably succumbing to harsh winters, the elements and wildlife, and lack of nourishment and care. Now, more than ever, I find it humbling when I realize I possess the very same roses planted by the hands of our first settlers. And, the lineage is still alive for over a hundred and fifty years.

Ralph Waldo Emerson best reflects my feelings about these beautiful flowers with those prickly thorns:
“There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence.”

                                     "Writing for a Box Set"
When the opportunity to write for a box set arose, I jumped on it with enthusiasm. I'd participated in a number of series in the distant past for my publisher, both as an author and an editor, and missed the experience of working in the team atmosphere. In my former lives as a nurse and an advocate for victims of violence, the work was exhausting as well as rewarding. I can't say I loved every minute of it, but none of it could ever be termed a success without the efforts of the entire team--either in the OR or in the criminal courts building.
Probably the most important aspect of a team is, in my opinion, when each member utilizes their particular strengths for the good of the whole. With regard to All In For Love:
One of the Lucky6 arranged a mind-boggling blog tour, then put it all down on an easy to comprehend spread sheet. As of this writing, she's doing something called a Thunderclap. For me, who recently mastered the art of opening attachments, I'm amazed at this woman's abilities.
Another is in charge of formatting. Bless her heart. I wouldn't do that even if someone held a gun to my head.
A third is the all time champ at graphics. Her teasers and photos, combined with a bright, eye-catching blog, Facebook banner and Pinterest page brings me to tears. I possess ten thumbs when it comes to photography; this woman's work, which feels so effortless, takes my breath away.
A fourth member, a veteran in box sets guided us newbies in the process, adding options for promotional ideas as well as dividing up the task list. Most helpful to all.
Another member of Lucky 6 is a wiz, and I stress WHIZ, at tweets and promotions. Again, effortless, mind blowing and tear inducing.
Me? Not much. I'm just sitting back, reaping the bennies.
With this crew there's a million of them.

The authors are offering a give-away to one person who leaves
their name and email address today: a wristlet tote.

Excerpt from Raising Kane by Kat Henry Doran
Lt. Kieran Pollack signs in to work and comes up against the woman of his dreams: Mallory Kane, ace investigative reporter. Unfortunately she's just spent the night in jail and is in no mood to speak with anyone--particularly a cop.
“Anything I need to know before I head upstairs, Sarge?”
“It’s all there.” The night duty man passed him the report from the previous platoon. “The usual pugs, thugs and mugs threw themselves a circus down at The Dirty Dawg last night.”
Kieran scrawled his name on the sign-in roster. “Again? Somebody ought to look into closing down that pest hole.”
“I bet the Mayor is thinkin’ along those same lines. With the Chief on vacation and the Deputy Chief at a meeting out of town, as PIO it’s your job to handle the fallout. Lucky man.”
Fall-out? “What are you talking about?”
A woman with mile-long legs and hair the color of roasting chestnuts strode past the desk, heading in the direction of the revolving door.
“Overnight guest,” the sergeant advised under his breath. “TV Reporter. I was you, I’d head that one off at the pass.”
In addition to a talent for scoping out shapely legs, Kieran possessed the good sense to act on sound advice. After shooting both cuffs and ensuring his tie hung straight, he glided up beside the woman. “Excuse me, miss?”
She stopped, threw back her shoulders, then turned. “Yes?”
In the shimmer of an early morning sun he saw a nasty bruise blossoming across one cheekbone and winced. “Does that hurt as bad as it looks?”
“Who are you and what do you want?”
She possessed a voice designed to make a man think of hot nights and cool sheets. Extending a hand, he launched into his usual PIO song and dance. “Kieran Pollack, Public Information Officer for the Victory PD. What’s a pretty thing such as yourself doing in a joint like this?”
The screech of tires on the street outside obscured any response she might have made. Panel vans bearing the logos of the local TV affiliates disgorged reporters and camera-persons who wasted no time in storming the doors to the Public Safety Building.
Kieran attempted to head her off at the pass with a fast two-step and a faster line of bull. “Look, can you help out this hard working public servant?”
She raised one hand to shield her injured cheek. “Not without my attorney.”
“Aw, now. Why do you want to go and do something like that? We don’t need no lousy lawyers to make things right, do we?”
“I believe it’s somewhere in the Bill of Rights,” she murmured, eluding his out-stretched hand with a fast step to the left.
“Please. Hear me out,” he pressed, one eye on the camera-persons now jockeying for position just inside the doors. “I can make this all disappear―if we could go someplace to talk. It would be to your advantage, I promise.”

Author Bio:
Kat Henry Doran uses her past adventures as a nurse and victim advocate for fodder in her stories. This especially held true for Raising Kane, her part of All In For Love. These days, when not not lashed to a sewing machine, creating tote bags in all sizes and functions and aprons in all sizes, she serves as devoted hand-maiden to the brightest lights in her life, her four grandchildren.
