MEET THE AUTHOR: Diane Burton - The Case of the Meddling Mama

Please welcome Detroit-area author Diane Burton with her novel, The Case of the Meddling Mama, the third book in her "An Alex O'Hara Novel" series. She writes mysteries, science fiction romance, and romantic suspense. With a love for comedy, she always includes some humor in her stories along with the suspense. When she wants to relax, she likes to watch movies—romantic comedy, action/adventure, and science fiction—but without the creepy aliens!

Often people ask authors where do you start when writing?
In her own words, Diane explains:
“An idea pops in my head, usually right before I fall asleep—a scene that comes out of nowhere. Or when I’m in a difficult spot in my work-in-progress. It’s so much more fun to write something new, fresh, exciting than a story that is giving me fits. So I don’t forget this powerful image, I’ll open a new file and write. Just for a few minutes. Then, I return to my WIP. When I’m ready to start a new project, I have plenty of ideas to choose from.”

I’m not a plotter. I like taking the idea and running with it. In my mind, I know where the story will go, a couple of key scenes, and the conclusion. Since the idea is fluid, and the characters have minds of their own (LOL), the story may change as I write. When I need info, I research on the fly. Too many times, though, the topic has interesting-sounding side links. Clicking on them is so easy, and before I know it, I forget that I should be writing instead of researching.

In The Case of the Meddling Mama, a secondary character thinks his buddy is involved with drugs. Since I know little about street drugs (just what I hear on TV and read in the newspaper), I hit several sites on drugs. I found it scary that messages kept popping up with offers of help for drug addiction. Though I amassed a tremendous amount of material, I could only use about ten percent, if that, and had to find places in the story where I could add that information without making it read like an info drop.

Here’s an excerpt that demonstrates what I mean. Alex is having dinner with friends. The husband is a teacher at the local high school.

“I have a question, Steve. It’s about drugs at the high school.”
For a moment, he looked startled, then his countenance turned dark. “You’d think in a small town like this we could keep out drugs and the dealers.” He cocked his head. “Have you heard something?”
Not wanting to betray Todd’s confidence, I hedged. “Just what was in the paper about the girl dying of an overdose.”
“Yeah, that was bad. The parents are in denial, of course. Considering what I know of Julie, I think it was accidental. She might have flirted with the drug then discovered the hard way she couldn’t tolerate it.” He shrugged. “When will kids realize they aren’t danger-proof?”
Laraine leaned over and patted his arm. “Weren’t we like that back then? Nothing could hurt us. We were invincible.”
“Is this some new kind of drug?” I asked.
“We’re seeing an increase in opioid addiction,” Steve said. “A parent, or grandparent, is prescribed an opioid for pain, and the kid sneaks a couple just to try it out. Likes the feeling and wants more. When that isn’t enough, they look for a dealer.”
Laraine looked at me earnestly. “My dad says something new is being sent to kids via the mail.” Being Far Haven’s police chief, her dad would know. “It was on the news a while back. It’s stronger than heroin and more deadly.”
“Pink.” Steve heaved a sigh. “We hope to God it doesn’t come here.”
“How do you stop this drug invasion?” I asked.
“Invasion. Good description.” Steve shook his head. “We help the kids with counseling, recommend rehab for them to the parents, and try to find the dealer. But if kids won’t give him or her up . . . our hands are tied.”

Blurb:
Once again, Alex O’Hara is up to her ears in mysteries. After surviving an attempted murder, all she wants is R&R time with Nick Palzetti. But his mother leaving his father (“that horse’s patoot”) and moving in with Alex puts a crimp in their plans. Then Nick leaves on assignment, and the teen she rescued from an abusive father believes his buddy is doing drugs. Meanwhile, Alex has two easy cases to take her mind off her shaky relationship with Nick—a philandering husband and a background check on a client’s boyfriend. Piece of cake.

MEET THE AUTHOR: Maureen Bonatch - "Destiny Calling"

I'm happy to introduce a fellow Pennsylvania author, Maureen Bonatch, who hails from a small town in Western Pennsylvania. She writes humorous paranormal romance and fantasy. When not pounding the computer keys, Maureen likes to relax by watching a movie...or yes, writing!

What is her favorite time of the day for writing? In her own words.....
"My favorite time of the day for writing is before the day officially begins. The time between night and dawn when I can quietly consider the mysteries of the night while capturing the hope of a new day. The paranormal and the possibilities of the extraordinary are more certain when I can almost tap into dreams as the world peacefully slumbers."

Blurb:
When the woman who raised Hope is murdered by something not human, Hope loses the only family she knows and discovers one she might wish she never met. With a touch that can make the desperate hopeful, Hope is the answer. The only question is if she can deal with sibling rivalry, accept that entities feeding off despair exist, and determine if Griffith is the man of her dreams, or not at all what he seems.

Excerpt:
I strained to release my arm from Griffith’s vise-like grip while scanning the surrounding trees, trying to determine which was less of a threat, the beast of a man holding me or those who might be waiting for me in the woods.
“You will come inside, now.” Griffith spoke slowly and deliberately as if I were a small child.
I batted at the hand Griffith placed on my head. “I’m not a puppy, quit petting me.”
“I will protect you.” Griffith’s warm breath caressed my ear. “If for no other reason, to find out what I’m giving up and why she wants you so badly.”
I inhaled his masculine scent, like musky earth. It washed over my face, and the tension in my jaw released. I stopped struggling. “Are you the devil?” My tongue was thick and heavy so the words came out slurred.
“Not even close.” His words soothed and comforted, like having a weighted blanket cocoon me. Each movement was an effort. It wasn’t the same as the thing in the woods. This was more like the feeling after a long massage or bubble bath.
“It’s not safe.” Griffith wrapped his arms around me, and I rested against his broad chest.
“It’s not safe.” I nodded. My muscles relaxed and my eyelids grew heavy.
“It’s cold. We’re going inside.” Griffith kept his arm supporting me as he steered me toward the house.
“We’re going inside.” I parroted and walked up the steps, leaning heavily on him.
Out of the corner of my eye, something was cautiously moving at the edge of the woods. Branches snapped as whatever was observing us crept closer.

MEET THE AUTHOR: Anna Durand - "The Mortal Falls" [Undercover Elemental, Book 1]

Please welcome Anna Durand who is from Michigan, the Great Lakes and Midwestern regions of our nation. She writes romance, both paranormal and erotic contemporary. When she sneaks away from her computer, you might find her listening to an audio-books.

When asked what she's working on now, she says...
"I've always got at least two projects in progress at any given time, so I can switch back and forth between them as needed. If I get stuck on one, I can work on the other. Right now, I'm deep into writing the second book in my Hot Scots series, Wicked in a Kilt, and having a great time with it. I love writing the hero, Aidan, because he has a wicked sense of humor and revels in the seductive effect he has on women, without being arrogant about it. The heroine, Calli, insists she will never sleep with him, or worse, fall in love with him--which gives me plenty of opportunities for humor as her resolve slips."

I'm also working on the second book in the Undercover Elementals series, The Mortal Fires. Lindsey and Nevan return in this book, but I've thrown them into even more trouble this time. Nevan's wife shows up and an incubus sets his sights on Lindsey, so you might say they've both got their hands full!

My third project in the works at the moment is Kinetic, the third book in the Psychic Crossroads series. I'm exploring the idea of psychic terrorism and what that might look like, and of course, the romance gets steamy! That's about all I'm working on at the moment.

Blurb:
A pragmatic human thrown into a world of magic...
Lindsey Porter fled from her traumatic past, determined to lay low, but now someone has framed her for murder. The quest for answers leads her into a parallel realm where magic reigns, and with a hostile sheriff and a shapeshifting assassin on her trail, she must place her life in the hands of a seductive, supernatural man who tempts her like no one else.

An immortal sylph enslaved by magic...
Nevan is trapped by a desperate bargain struck a century earlier, yet the beautiful, spirited Lindsey has enticed him to abandon his magically enforced duty. As forbidden passion flares between them, they'll risk everything to uncover the truth and find what they both need the most—redemption.

When two worlds collide...
The fates of the elemental and mortal realms depend on the star-crossed lovers. As dark secrets from their pasts threaten to shatter the fragile trust between Lindsey and Nevan, a shocking revelation holds the power to deliver salvation or destruction.

Excerpt:
He jerked his head, glancing past me, past the tree. I listened, but my ears detected nothing except the soft rumble of the falls and the thudding of my own heart. His gaze shifted to the water. "I wish I could assist you, but I'm afraid I must go."
"You can't. We have to call the police."
He pushed away from the tree. "Sorry, darlin'. Can't help ye with that."
        "You must've seen something."
He shrugged, his shoulders flexing. "I saw what you saw, nothing more."
"You have to stick around and tell the police your story."
Humor glinted in his eyes and his lips twitched into a half-repressed smirk. "My presence would do nothing to help the situation. Take my word on that."
Well, he did have a point. A half-naked man with freaky eyes corroborating my story probably wouldn't console the sheriff. Oh hell, given my relationship with the sheriff, he'd slap cuffs on me for being in the vicinity of trees, never mind my stumbling onto a corpse.
The stranger swung his head to the left, diving his face into my hair, and inhaled deeply. Sniffing my hair? What the hell? I slapped my palms on his chest and shoved. He didn't budge. I pushed harder, but I might as well have wrestled with a giant redwood.
He lifted his head, eyes clouding with confusion. "How odd. I thought it was your hair, but it isn't. You smell of—I must've imagined it."
       "I don't understand a word you've said."
He fingered my hair, then withdrew his hand. "At least I succeeded in distracting you from the poor dead fellow."
The stranger pulled back and opened one palm. A flower appeared there, as if by magic. A daylily, its white petals blushed with pink. His other hand spread open, revealing my gun balanced on his palm. He pressed the derringer into my hand and curled my fingers around it. "Thought ye might like to have this."
        I stared at him. "Uh…yeah."
He tucked the flower behind my ear, planted a kiss on my forehead, hopped back a step, and vanished.
